Making The Dream A Reality | Entrepreneur Success

Working for yourself and being your own boss in a word 'Freedom'. I had the joy of meeting and interviewing Nicola Matthews owner of Why Just Me Boutique. Nicola is an United States Army veteran, a previous federal employee, and a single mother of four with a BAS from Campbell University. Despite all her accomplishments there was still something missing...the unfulfilled dream of owning her own business. “It’s always been a dream since I was a little girl to sell my creations”.
So after much prayer she stepped out on faith, left her federal employ of eleven years, and took the steps to start her own business. According to Nicola it was not always easy for on several occasions she was called very hurtful names such as stupid and inconsiderate to name a few, and her five year relationship ended due to her decision. In-spite of the opposition that came against her she never allowed it to hold her back. Nicola was taught to be a fighter according in her own words she stated "I have had to fight since birth, no matter what happens it’s in me to survive". So, “Why Just Me” boutique was born. Why Just Me provides high quality fashion such as clothing, accessories, and scents for the body at a low cost. They serve children, young adults, ladies, and men.
How did you obtain the financing, the building, and the inventory? First I never imagined it would be as hard as it was, there were so many variables that I did not take into account. As far as the building was concerned one day while driving down the street I saw a for lease sign in a shop window. I contacted the owner and was able to rent the building space, the inventory was fairly easy due to the fact that I am an avid shopper. In the beginning I built up my inventory by hitting sales and clearance racks. The financing was my own personal savings.
How long did it take for your business to get going / stocked? Well we have only been open for a year this month, but all I can say is God’s grace has been amazing
Was the transitioning from employee to employer difficult? No not at all, due to my previous experience with Avon and other passions I have pursued, I was well equipped.
Is being in the business world a challenge? Of course it’s a challenge, but it is important to follow your dream and put God first of course before any decision. I have learned the importance of planning. Never jump out into the unknown without a plan
What has been the most challenging part about starting your business? The hours! It’s me all the time I have to ensure that the hours advertised are honored
What is the biggest lesson you have learned in starting and operating your business? Being too nice, daily I realize that you can’t please everyone.
What do you find to be most exciting about being an entrepreneur? Freedom, I am able to be active in the community by providing clothing to the less fortunate, participate more with my children’s day to day, and of course I am my own boss.
Have you had that moment when you thought “wow I did it, I really did it”? The second month after everything was setup I walked into my boutique and was like ‘WOW!’.
What advice would you share with aspiring entrepreneurs? If you have a dream follow it, to fail is not to try. Don’t listen to the noise and opposition of people around you, listen and trust in self
Who inspires you to prosper? My children.
In closing people will say negative things as you try to pursue your dream but it will only stop you if you allow it, entrepreneurship is rewarding never give up!
