WEIGHT LOSS STORY
Ahlumba Free To Be Me
As a child and teenager Ahlumba never had any problem with her weight, it wasn't until after giving birth to her daughter that she began to gain an excessive amount of weight, because she was under the mistaken impression that she would lose it with out having to do any exercise...but boy was she wrong! Ahlumba stated "I eventually ballooned up to a very unattractive 195 pounds, of course it was not over night but over a course of time".
What made you decide to get serious about your weight loss?
Honestly because being overweight is no fairytale and I cant really say it was a struggle because I was to lazy to work hard to get the weight off. Most of my time was spent trying to find easy ways to lose it (such as pills, not eating, grapefruit juice...etc...).
One day I was blessed with a revelation...I did not gain this weight quickly and it was not going to magically come off because I ate salad for a week, the same time it took to get on me was going to be the same time it possibly take to get off. There I was 5'2 weighed 195 pounds and felt insecure in so many ways. I never thought i was good enough, I was ashamed of myself, and allowed the weight to hinder me to the point where i didn't want to shop anymore. I stopped taking pictures, socializing with my peers, always felt ugly, and the television became my solace. I was a prisoner of hope, daily I wished that one day I would lose the weight but wishing wasn't getting it, something had to give.
What did you do to lose weight?
At a crossroad I stood, five years of my adult life spent overweight and unhappy, I started with just walking outdoors; upgraded to the treadmill; until eventually working out on my lunch break, which is where I came across the elliptical which quickly became my baby/favorite.
Did you use a special diet plan such as weight watchers?
No, I didn't have the finances to use anything like weight watches or Jenny Craig. I used what was in my home, also it was important for me to lose the weight the way I ate normally for I believed if you take food that you truly enjoy out your diet once you loose the weight you will eat it again and possibly gain more back then before. As long as i didn't feel like I was restricted from certain food i succeed, basically i ate what i wanted and counted calories.
How did you stay motivated and focused?
I stayed focused by immersing myself in things that motivated me such as; The Biggest Loser, stories from the Joy Fit Club, weight loss blogs, any thing inspirational, and believe it or not I loved the weight loss infomercials. I took courage in their victories knowing that if they could achieve it so could I.
How much did you lose?
Today I am 65 pounds lighter and for the first time in a long time I feel beautiful. Who would have ever thought that I could and would fit a size 5 again...At times I forget I'm not that fat girl anymore until I see my reflection in the mirror. It's in those moments that i really see me as if it were the first time and i think to myself "Wow! You did it, you really did it"
How has life been / changed since losing the weight?
Well I'm 30 and have the confidence and desire to do all the things I wanted to do; I love to shop now(In the words of Betty or Wilma 'Charge it'), enjoy life, and have fun. but sometimes it's hard for apart of me still feels like that fat insecure girl that wanted to hide from the world and watch TV from the safety of her home. For whatever reason there are times when I feel like I'm not good enough but I move forward in spite of, knowing that this to shall pass.
Words of advice?
Stay encouraged, though I'm not a national celebrity that just lost weight but a regular everyday American, I understand the plight and struggle that comes from working at a dead-end job, living in a recession while trying to achieve a goal desired. Just never give up because one day you too will look up and say 'Wow..I did it.
